Lancer Parent Organization General Meeting

October 2, 2023

Call to Order: 7:01 p.m.

Location: Room 180

Attendees: Sara Robeson, Aleta Harris, Amy Buckley, Mark Masterson, Beth Nelson, Jennifer Adams, Jenna Fleming, Jennifer Zeck, April Ladner, Jenifer Robertson, Nicole Vandesteeg, LaDonna Ellis, Mary Beth Brown, Jerry Harris, Dawn Hagen, Izzy Imig, Amy Krimmel and Dr. Calcaterra.

RSD Guests: Dr. Curtis Cain, Mary LaPak, Kate Moore

 

Introduction of Guest Speaker, Dr. Curtis Cain, Rockwood School District Superintendent.

Superintendent Remarks, Dr. Curtis Cain:

·         Information was shared about the Rockwood School District, including recent ranking, statistics and the focus on the future of the district.

·         Information on Proposition 3 (a zero-tax rate increase levy transfer) that is on the November 7, 2023 ballot was presented. See rsdmo.org/prop3 for more information.

·         Also discussed was how Proposition 3 will impact students and staff at Lafayette.

·         Town Halls will be held throughout the month of October at the 4 RSD High Schools.

·         Any questions regarding Prop3 may be sent to prop3questions@rsdmo.org

 

June 12, 2023 Minutes Approval- Aleta Harris motioned, Mark Masterson seconded. The motion carried.

September 11, 2023 Minutes Approval. Sara Robeson motioned, Jennifer Adams seconded. The motion carried.

October 2, 2023 Consent Agenda Approval. Sara Robeson motioned, Aleta Harris seconded. The motion carried.           

Principal’s Report, Dr. Calcaterra:

  • Homecoming week and festivities were a success
  • Lafayette will be pariicpating in Red Ribbon Week. Information will be coming.
  • MODOT recently provided a speaker to our health, drivers ed and PE classes that was well-received. Plan to have this speaker return for 2nd Semester.
  • A committee meets monthly to review safety practices/procedures/protocols-reach out to Dr. Calcaterra if you are a parent interested in participating.
  • Contest of Champions was held last weekend with the Lancer Regiment as hosts.
  • Postseason athletic events will be taking place soon
  • A water bottle refill station was ordered today for use outdoors near the athletic fields. Will be considering a second one to be installed in the Spring.

 

President, Sara Robeson:

·         Thank you to the Masterson family for the use of their car for the Homecoming parade.

·         Discussion & Board Vote-Donation request from President’s Forum for $200 from LPO towards support of the Proposition 3 Initiative. Sara Robeson motioned. Beth Nelson seconded. The motion failed.

o   Discussion included what is allowed for PTO’s with regards to supporting ballot initiatives and candidates.

·         Discussion & Board Vote-LHS Superfans Request for $200 and spiritwear items to be used for a basketball shooting competition at halftime during some of the home Lafayette basketball games. Beth Nelson motioned, Mark Masterson seconded. The motion carried.

·         Discussion & Board Vote-$2800 to support purchase of water bottle filler for outdoors near the athletic fields. Mark Masterson motioned, Beth Nelson seconded. The motion carried.

·         Discussion-Volunteers for Class Fundraisers-publicity about what the fundraisers/events are—speak with Sara for ideas.

·         Homecoming- We had a very successful Homecoming!  Thank you to everyone who participated!  Highlights for LPO were the Parade - thank you to April Ladner for all your hard work!  April coordinates our judges, creates the judges' stand, helps coordinates cars and signage, takes care of getting candy for LPO and Dr. Calcaterra, helps facilitate, tallies and presents our Float Awards to the announcer.  

·         Canned Food Drive - LPO will help facilitate and encourage participation in the canned food drive that will kick off with Trick or Treat for Cans at the end of October.

·         Lancer Legacy- not much movement- we will continue to push for the next month

 

First VP-Community Involvement, Giovanna Lear:

●       Thanks to April Ladner for organizing all things Homecoming!

●       Thanks to Lizanne Campbell for always working to get parent volunteers for the school store and all other events!

●       Thanks to LaDonna Ellis for organizing food from Qdoba for Parent Teacher Conference meals in October!

●       Thanks to Nicole Vandesteeg for recognizing the custodial staff during the month of October!

 

Second VP-Communications, Aleta Harris:

·         10/5 is the deadline to submit content for the 10/10 newsletter

 

Treasurer, Mark Masterson:

·         Monthly Financial Report was distributed.

·         Work continues to organize some of the past records

·         Will work with LaDonna & Nicole regarding Staff Appreciation vs Hospitality budget amounts to ensure expenses are being assigned to the correct line item

 

Class of 2024, Tracy Montgomery/Beth Nelson:

·         A class meeting for parents was held on 9/18. Approximately 70 parents and Dr. Jones were in attendance.

·         Parents continue to signup for identified volunteer needs.

Class of 2025, Dawn Werk & Tara Ference:

·         The first parent planning meeting for Taste of West County was held on Thursday, 9/28

o   Information was shared from Marquette’s “Taste” event held on 9/20

o   Binders were distributed to committee volunteers

·         Hoping for increased parent attendance at the next meeting scheduled for 10/19.

Class of 2026, Shalini Arya:

·         The first trivia night planning meeting for parents will be held on 10/19 at 6:30pm.

Class of 2027, Jennifer Adams & Jenna Fleming:

●       Class of 2027 will be having a parent meeting on 10/10 at 7p-8p for Carnival planning. We had our first meeting on 9/12 and had volunteers sign up to chair approximately half of the committees. Hoping to get more parents involved asap.

●       Volunteers are needed to fill 2 more committee chair positions.

●       Planning a social media blitz

Lancer’s Landing, Shalini Arya:

·         Manager positions for school store are filled.

Community Events & Outreach, April Ladner:

●       The homecoming parade was a success. There were some very creative and well done floats and everyone had a good time. The judges were fabulous and left with goodie bags from the LPO. Will plan to continue with goodie bags for future years.

●       New--will post on social media the parade float winners of the various categories. If not in attendance at halftime at the football game, this information might not be received otherwise.

Hospitality, LaDonna Ellis:

●       Planning with Dr. Calcaterra for first dinner for Fall Parent Teacher Conferences.  Considering Qdoba and dessert and drinks from Sam's.  Will work with volunteers and media to send out sign-up genius for help with the event.  Will only need 4 volunteers.  

LPO Website/Membership Toolkit, Martha Czymmek

●       On September 14, 2023, request for LHS directory information was submitted to the District Communications Department. After the 2023-2024 FERPA spreadsheet is received, will start updating our LPO Membership Toolkit (MTK) directory/newsletter database.
