- Students must have completed at least two years on staff by the end of their senior year. (Students in their second year on staff are eligible.)
- All Honor Roll inductees will receive a certificate of recognition, and a listing of all inductees into the Honor Roll will be published in NSPA’s Best of the High School Press.
- Students do not need to apply for the honor cord. Publications advisers will submit the names and unofficial transcripts of all eligible seniors to NSPA by the deadline (usually at the end of February or early March).
- Honor cords may be ordered from NSPA after nominees are accepted (usually in early April) for $10 each.

- National organization - All seniors who are inducted Quill & Scroll members will receive an honor cord. (Quill and Scroll is an International Honorary Society for high school journalists.)
- Members of Quill and Scroll Honor Society must be chosen from students enrolled in the high school who, at the time of their recommendation, meet the following requirements:
- They must be of sophomore, junior or senior classification.
- They must have the equivalent of an unweighted B grade average, or be in the upper third of their class.
- They must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school publications work. They may be staffers of a magazine, newspaper, yearbook, news organization, online site or radio/television station at the school.
- They must be recommended by the adviser of the student publication.
- They must be approved by the Quill and Scroll Executive Director.

- Overall average of 20 hours of community service for each year in AFJROTC
- JROTC instructors reserve the latitude to designate one graduating cadet each year that served with “distinction” in a leadership position within the cadet corps and will be based on meritorious performance, despite the aforementioned academic criteria. The 20-hour overall average for community service remains a requirement for the cadet identified by the "distinction" clause.
