LHS Honor Cord Criteria

The following criteria is in place for the Class of 2024 and beyond.

Content Area Cord Color Criteria
Academic Gold Gold and White Qualifying students have earned a cumulative GPA of 4.0 for the duration of high school
Academic Silver Silver and White Qualifying students have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5-3.99 for the duration of high school
Academic Bronze Bronze and White Qualifying students have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0-3.49 for the duration of high school
Art Pink
  • Minimum five (5) semesters of visual arts classes
  • Minimum one (1) upper level "2" class
  • Department unweighted GPA 3.75
Business/CCE Royal Blue
  • Minimum of four (4) semesters of business coursework
  • 3.75 GPA
Computer Science Teal
  • Four (4) semesters of coursework
  • Two (2) semesters must be a weighted grade course
  • “A”s in all classes
FACS Mint Green
  • Minimum of five (5) semesters of coursework
  • “A”s in all classes
Forensics White
Industrial Tech Gold
  • Complete at least four (4) semesters of coursework
  • Achieve a non-weighted 4.0 GPA in all coursework within the department
  • Conflicts are resolved at the discretion of the department chair.
  • Demonstrate good character traits * (department can deny for this)
International Thespian Society Copper
  • ITS member
  • 3.5 cumulative GPA
Journalism Purple
  • Seniors involved in student publications:
    • Earn 125 service/professional development points
    • Serve on staff both semesters senior year
    • Maintain an unweighted 3.5 GPA in a minimum of four semesters of journalism/related coursework (production classes, journalism prereq, photography, graphic design, multimedia technology, etc.)
    • Consistently follow the guidelines outlined in the student publications handbook

Language Arts Red
  • 8 semesters (4 credits) of coursework (7 completed)
  • 4.125 GPA in ELA courses
Mathematics Light Blue
  • High school grades only
  • No “C”s (even in a weighted class)
  • At least one AP level class and at least one additional WG class
  • Maximum of two (2) semester “B”s only
Music Green
  • Eight (8) semesters in a performing music ensemble course
  • Minimum 3.875 GPA
  • No unexcused absence from any school music performance
  • Minimum three (3) extracurricular performance activities approved by the Department Chair.
National Forensics League White Minimum of 75 points from speaking/interpretive performances
National Scholastic Press Association Purple
  • National organization - The NSPA Journalism Honor Roll honors students who are members of the school's publications staff(s)
  • Students must have achieved a 3.5 or higher grade point average (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Students must have completed at least two years on staff by the end of their senior year. (Students in their second year on staff are eligible.)
  • All Honor Roll inductees will receive a certificate of recognition, and a listing of all inductees into the Honor Roll will be published in NSPA’s Best of the High School Press.
  • Students do not need to apply for the honor cord. Publications advisers will submit the names and unofficial transcripts of all eligible seniors to NSPA by the deadline (usually at the end of February or early March).
  • Honor cords may be ordered from NSPA after nominees are accepted (usually in early April) for $10 each.
Physical Education Sage
  • Six (6) semesters of coursework
  • 4.0 GPA in Physical Education coursework
  • Health, Drivers Ed., and First Aid do not count towards meeting the honor cord requirements
Project Lead The Way Hunter Green
  • Complete at least six (6) semesters of coursework in the same course strand
  • Achieve “A”s in all coursework within the department
  • Conflicts are resolved at the discretion of the department chair
  • Demonstrate good character traits * (department can deny for this)
Quill and Scroll Blue and Gold
  • National organization - All seniors who are inducted Quill & Scroll members will receive an honor cord. (Quill and Scroll is an International Honorary Society for high school journalists.)
  • Members of Quill and Scroll Honor Society must be chosen from students enrolled in the high school who, at the time of their recommendation, meet the following requirements:
    • They must be of sophomore, junior or senior classification.
    • They must have the equivalent of an unweighted B grade average, or be in the upper third of their class.
    • They must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school publications work. They may be staffers of a magazine, newspaper, yearbook, news organization, online site or radio/television station at the school.
    • They must be recommended by the adviser of the student publication.
    • They must be approved by the Quill and Scroll Executive Director.
ROTC Maize
  • A minimum of three (3) full years of AFJROTC
  • An AFJROTC CGPA of 4.0
  • No more than one "C" as a final letter grade in any other class in grades 9-12
  • Overall average of 20 hours of community service for each year in AFJROTC
  • JROTC instructors reserve the latitude to designate one graduating cadet each year that served with “distinction” in a leadership position within the cadet corps and will be based on meritorious performance, despite the aforementioned academic criteria. The 20-hour overall average for community service remains a requirement for the cadet identified by the "distinction" clause.
Science Silver
  • Complete a minimum of seven (7) semesters of science in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
  • No more than 2 “B”s (unweighted) in all science courses
  • Computer Science is not considered a science for the Science Honor Cord
  • PLTW Biomedical Science is not considered a science for the Science Honor Cord
Social Studies Navy Blue
  • Complete a minimum of eight (8) semesters of social studies
  • Students must have taken and completed at least two (2) AP Courses in social studies
  • No “C”s in any social studies course
  • Students must have earned a 4.0 GPA or higher in social studies courses
Theater Arts Copper
  • 4.0 GPA in introductory (Acting 1/2, Tech 1/2) theater coursework
  • Two (2) theater classes (minimum)
  • 10 ITS points
World Language Burgundy
  • Successful completion of eight (8) semesters of the same language at high school or successful completion of Level 5/AP
  • Need to meet the qualifications to earn a SOBL (I3 in all domains).
  • No more than two (2) “B”s
  • No behavior or conduct concerns (department can deny for this)
  • Conflicts are resolved at the discretion of the department chair

* good character = no major infractions or discipline issues, an honest display of traits that lead to success, a productive work ethic, etc.
